Build an Email List: Newsletter, Waitlist and Wishlist
Email rarely creates the first attention. It stores attention from Google, YouTube, Reddit, social, launches and ads, making those sources more valuable over time.
Why this traffic source matters
A signup is a deliberate, high-intent action. Updates, features, chapters, demos, discounts and new content can be delivered repeatedly without buying the entire contact again.
Different retention signals fit different products: Steam wishlists for games, release waitlists for apps, bonus material for books, product updates for SaaS and a mini template for template products.
How to use the channel
Give a specific reason to subscribe: a template, bonus chapter, beta access, price alert, learning series, launch notice or update for a defined feature. “Join our newsletter” is too weak on its own.
Every destination should offer a useful second action when the direct purchase does not happen. The newsletter itself should deliver tips, examples, cases, resources and release notes rather than only product announcements.
Step by step
Practical implementation plan
- Choose the right capture goal for product type and maturity.
- Write a specific and immediately understandable signup promise.
- Set up the form, double opt-in and privacy information with low friction.
- Capture source and interest for useful segmentation.
- Send standalone value and relevant product updates consistently.
Product fit and use cases

What to measure
- Signup rate by traffic source
- Click and reply rate
- Activation and purchase by segment
- Unsubscribes and list quality
- Conversion or revenue per recipient
Common mistakes and risks
- Treating email as a first-traffic source.
- Showing a form with no concrete value exchange.
- Prioritizing list size over interest and segment quality.
- Sending only product announcements with no recurring value.
